Presented and narrated by Chris Bellamy, Professor of Military Science at
Cranfield University, UK; this powerful documentary tells the tragic story of young Soviet girls who were sent to Northern Russia to work as language interpreters to the Allied sailors who were posted there between 1941-5. When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, the UK and USA sent support convoys to Russia’s northern ports. The Soviet regime established drinking and dance clubs for the visiting sailors; and inevitably, the local girls and young interpreters became frequent guests. By 1946, fifteen young women had married their British lovers. The Soviet authorities denied the
girls permits to leave the USSR. The British government suspected the wives of being double agents, while the Soviet authorities suspected them of being informants; either way the young women were condemned.
‘Visas for Love’ reveals the conflict between two opposing systems and the resulting events that caused this great human tragedy. We hear first hand accounts from Russian survivors, former British navy personnel, and from documents hidden away in the Soviet secret police archives never made known before until now.
